DIRECT-INFO will apply a new approach for indexing of multimedia data, which takes advantage of the media's multimodality. The main idea here is driven by two facts:
· Semantics is not independent of context, thus effective semantic extraction can be performed only within a certain, known context.
· Extraction of semantics so far was performed based mostly on one type of media. We want here to utilise the multimodality of the medium correlating different kind of data (video, audio, text, still images, …) simultaneously for effective & robust semantic extraction.
The goal is to first detect and extract logical entities (context) from the data by pre-specified models for different kind of information: specific broadcasts, events of interest or general descriptions of different genres. The underlying context-description model comprises then the pre-stored information. In the second step, the extracted entities will then be semantically correlated by taking advantage of predefined and learned contextual knowledge and semantic information and finally fused to a - for the end-user - meaningful summary.
The project duration of DIRECT-INFO is 24 months and is divided into four phases. Each of these phases is concluded by one of the following major milestones:
I. overall specification (PM 6): definition of user requirements, use cases and the system architecture finalized, quality assurance plan and objective tree defined (D1.1.2 / PM3).
II. DIRECT-INFO prototype (PM 12): first prototype system of DIRECT-INFO with limited functionality but ready for a first evaluation to be done in WP7 / T7.2 by IDI and NMR-I
III. DIRECT-INFO V1.0 (PM 21): final prototype system of DIRECT-INFO with full functionality, already evaluated by industrial partners IDI and NMR-I
